fiberglass for the first time

happy 4th everyone!

today i attacked something i have never done - working with fiberglass. as you have seen my fairing is in a sad shape. so i have been thinking about fixing it with fiberglass. i have a co-worker who has extensive expericen/knowledge in working with the stuff, so he has been encouraging me to do this. i also watched a lot of youtube video in how to apply fiberglass. that also helped me alot.

i used Bondo brand fiberglass repair kit. i found it at autozone for $12 or so. it came with the cloth, resin, hardner, spreader, stirrer, and container. i used 12 drips of hardner for one oz of rizen as directed on the box, but it sat up too fast, since i was working in a hot climate. next time i know to use less. i used two oz of risen for this job.

but i have two complaints on this product, tho.
- the container had holes on the four corners, so it leaked - what a mess.
- the hardner did not have any color, so i did not know if i had it mixed well.

i cut one piece of cloth the size of the hole. another piece a bit bigger than that. then another piece a bit bigger than that. i ended up with about 6-7 pieces which i stacked up - the largest piece being the bottom and the smallest piece at the very top. i followed direction of this youtube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6N7YMr6E564)

before - i need to cover this hole.

after applying the fiberglass - what a mess. next time, i will squeeze out resin more.

after sanded - 60 grid, 100 grid, then 220 grid makes it pretty smooth. it is ready for primer.

there were two more tears (i did not take picture of them.) that i applied fiberglass. they all came out ok. so far, i am very happy with the result. the only thing i am NOT happy is the weather. it is storming outside, so i can't paint! (i do all my painting in my backyard.)

ps my arms and legs are itching like crazy. i got the fiberglass all over while sanding. it is itching even after taking shower!!!
