Custom LED Integrated LED Tail Lights: Part II Tail Light Installation

Now it's time to replace the old tail light.  I placed the unit by the existing tail light.  It was obvious that the turn signal wires were too short. It appears AT LEAST 12 inches too short.

The next task was to elongate both wires. I decided to lengthen by 18 inches.
  1. Cut the wires
  2. Strip the ends
  3. Solder together
  4. Put heat shrink tubing

To remove the OEM tail light, disconnect the wire.  Then you need to unscrew two 10mm bolts just in front of the unit. BUT you can't get to it unless you loosen the four allen head screws.  By the way, those two 10mm bolts are hiding under the flexible wire holder.  I took the picture below after I straightened the flexible wire holder.

Once you unscrew both 10mm bolts, a narrow metal plate should fall to the floor. The nuts to those bolts are welded to the plate.  You can get the tail light assembly off now.  Look at the assembly.  Where those 10mm bolts were, there should be a metal collars and rubber bushings.  You need to transfer them to the new tail light.

Now, it's time to install the new light assembly. Basically, you do everything in reverse order. A few things I did ...
  • After installing the entire assembly first time, it didn't seem to be tightly mounted.  So I added lock washers between the narrow metal plate and the fender.  This helped.
  • I routed the turn signal wires where the old wire used to go through.

And as you see below, you connect green wire to the gray connector and the brown wire to the black connector.
