On October 11th, a 2008 Yamaha WR250R followed me home the other day. It hasn't ran since 2016, said the previous owner.
6,637 Miles on the odometer.
The first step was to order a cheap battery off Amazon. I wanted to spend as little money as possible before finding out that this bike can not be restored. $35.00
Next step, I took the tank off and took the fuel pump out. Oh, boy. The tank was full of rust as expected and the fuel pump was in bad shape, with electrical terminals deteriorated. I filled the tank with over 2 gallons of white vinegar for two days, then neutralized with baking soda. Washed everything well, then dried. I proceeded to coat the tank with a mixture of gas and engine oil to minimize further rust. Air filter was also a mess. It couldn't hold its shape. It fell a part easily. I replaced it with the Tusk brand.
The fuel pump was not salvageable. I bought a new one from Partzilla for $350... OUCH. Swapping it out was very easy.
I replaced the spark plug. In the process, I sprayed engine fog in the cylinder just in case.
10/21 - front tire/tube was replaced.
10/22 - Fill the tank with 0.5 gallons of gas and tried to run it. No go. Sprayed the air box with starter fluid and it would run a second or two. I let it sit with the new gas, hoping it might penetrate through.
10/23 - tried again and IT STARTED AND RAN! Lots of white smoke from the oil in the tank and some engine fog. I will put all back in a few days and take it for a run.
